What a difference a day makes. After 16 hours of meetings and strategy sessions, my inclination was to just write, “Wow!, Wow! Wow!” I know, very articulate. But what else is there to say? Who knew that one of those situations that you prepare for and never expect to happen, actually happened.
It’s late and tomorrow’s first meeting starts at 6:00 a.m., so I’ll be brief. Much of what went on today is still classified and can’t be discussed. This entry is for my friends and colleagues. You know who you are. Corporate Flacks, Spinmeisters, Mouth Pieces … today was the kind of day you live for – if you are a true PR adrenaline junkie.
The last time I felt such exhilaration was working the return of the USS Cole to service at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS. To be part of a situation, where what you do as a PR practitioner makes an impact, is a rush.
Here’s what I can say about what went on today. I have never been more proud of the way my client, Ole Miss, and our Agency handled the situation. The contingency plans, the “what if’s” and the back-up strategies are worth every minute spent in seemingly endless meetings.
At the end of the day, the first presidential debate just became more important than ever. As a result of today’s turn of events, the ratings for the debate will be higher than projected – higher than ever imagined. One day soon I’ll share the good, bad and ugly of what happened in the war room. In the meantime …
